Rattoo Tower in Ballyduff County Kerry

A superb example of the medieval Round Tower, the only one extant in Kerry and one of the finest in the country. The Tower stands at 92 feet, there were six floors inside, where the top floor houses windows facing the cardinal points.

Roughly in the year 1200 there was founded here a preceptory of the Knights Hospitallier of Saint John of Jerusalem by Meiler Fitz Henry.

In 1207 the grounds and dwellings came into the possession of the Augustinian canons of the Arroasian order.

Further down along the field from the Tower are the ruins of a 15th century Priory church.

In the distance one can see toward the Shannon, a perfect vantage to spot a crew of marauding Vikings make their way along the waters.
